Namitha Pramod is not just a pretty star.

In the seven years of her acting career, Pramod, who debuted as a little girl in Rajesh Pillai’s Traffic, showed promise with Satyan Anthikaad’s Puthiya Theerangal. She took home the Amrita Film Award for New Face of the Year.

There was no stopping her after that. She held her ground opposite senior actors like Dileep (in Sound Thoma, Villai Veeran and Chandraettan Evideya) and Kunchako Boban (in Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum). That she could handle comedy well was evident in the campus tale Adi Kapyare Kootamani.

Stepping out of her comfort zone, Pramod did two Telugu films, Chuttalabai and Kathalo Rajakumari.

Pramod now gears up for her Tamil debut with Nimir — a Priyadarshan film.

She plays Malar, a typical Tamil girl with long hair and sporting a bindi.

While Nimir is a remake of Malayalam film Maheshinte Prathikaram, Pramod clarified that the director recreated everything to show the Tamil ethos.

“He did not want people comparing it with the original.”

Priyadarshan’s dark glasses and his grim exterior kept her nervous initially, but as work began, she got comfortable with him.

“His method of working is unlike other directors,” said the fan, who counts Chitram and Thalavattam (Priyadarshan’s films) her favourites. “He asked me to come to sets like a blank slate.”

Malar is a bold young woman and that had to be reflected in her gait and manner of talking.

Pramod said she felt co-actor Udhay was unassuming, despite his lineage (he is the grandson of the DMK leader, M. Karunanidhi).

She is now working on two Malayalam films — Kammara Sambhavam, a period story written by Murali Gopi, and Professor Dinkan, a 3D entertainer.
