With a title like Magalir Mattum (Ladies Only), how can women not take over the stage?

Breaking conventions, the music album for the Tamil film was released in Chennai on April 24 by Lakshmi Sivakumar (Tamil actor Surya’s mother), Seema (Jyotika’s mother) and Parvati Gomathi Nayakam (director G. Bramma’s mother).

Magalir Mattum is a story inspired by my mother,” said Bramma, who made a mark with his debut film, Indian National Award-winning Kuttram Kadithal, in 2015.

Magalir Mattum film celebrates women, he added.

Jyotika plays the lead role of Prabhavati, a documentary filmmaker. This is her second film following her comeback in 2015 with 36 Vayidhinile.

Speaking at the music launch, Jyothika said that actresses after 30 are generally offered roles of a mother to a 12-year-old.

“But Bramma’s Prabhavati was younger than I was and unmarried. On top of that, I had to learn to drive a motorbike,” she said.

Magalir Mattum also has veteran actresses Urvashi, Bhanupriya and Saranya Ponvannan in significant roles.

“Lend dignity to the women of your films,” Jyotika said in her message that went out to all directors.

“Cinema has a big impact on the youth who follow stars. When films of their icons depict women in revealing attire and revel in double entendres, fans get a wrong message,” she said.

“Why must a hero romance four women? Fans think it’s OK to imitate such behaviour in real [life]. Let’s make good films,” said Jyothika, a mother of two who is clear about the kind of roles she intends to pursue in the second phase of her career.

“As actors, we are socially responsible and should leave a good impact on the young generation,” the actress added.

Ghibran’s music in this film’s album is peppy. Check out Karthi Sivakumar’s rendition of the song Gubu, Gubu, Gubu.
