The journey of Adhithya Ramachandran Venkatapathy (known as Adhi), one half of music duo Hiphop Tamizha, is one to be applauded.

He began his journey as an independent musician on YouTube four years ago, and now this pioneer of Tamil hip hop is ready with his debut film, Meesaya Murruku (Twirl Your Moustache). Not only has he written the script and directed this romantic entertainer, he has played the lead role, written the lyrics and composed the music.

In 2012, when Adhi came up with his independent album, Hip Hop Thamizha, it was received with great love. Here was a Tamizhan (native of Tamil Nadu) doing hip hop music. Until then, Tamil hip hop music was the sole preserve of Malaysian Tamilian artists.

Adhi says it was his passion for music that drove him ahead. It was this same passion that had egged him to leave his home in Coimbatore a few years ago to find his place in the music world.

“For a dream, some sacrifice their life, while others lose their dreams in the pursuit of their life,” he says. “There is a thin line between these two statements. Meesaya Murruku explores that thin space.”

Meesaya Murruku is not his biography, Adhi clarifies. It is a work of fiction with a few incidents taken from his life. His character in the film is also named Adhi.

“He is a college student who is ready to face the world outside. What are the decisions he has to take now, forms the rest of the story,” adds the admirer of Tamil poet Subramanya Bharathi.

Hooked onto music and poetry from when he was in grade six, Adhi went on to win prizes in school and college cultural competitions for music and poetry. A self-taught musician, his cinema journey began with Tamil film, Naan, as a singer. Turning composer with Sundar C’s Ambala he worked in more films, including Thani Oruvan. He is now busy with music for the upcoming Tamil film Imaikkaa Nodigal and Telugu film Krishna Arjuna Yudham.

Meesaya Murruku is produced by director Sundar C. Newcomer Athmika is paired opposite Adhi. The supporting cast includes comedian Vivek, Malavika and Vijayalakshmi.
