A small, independent film, titled Cake, is likely to change the game, at least for those who believe that only ‘masala’ sells. Directed and scripted by UK-based filmmaker Asim Abbasi, Cake is said to be a simple but emotionally-gripping drama surrounding the characters played by a bunch of powerhouse performers such as Amina Shaikh, Sanam Saeed, Adnan Malik and Syed Mohammad Ahmad.

According to Ahmad, the film’s “script made me cry, literally, when I read it.”

Himself a noted playwright, with acting stints in a few TV plays and films, Ahmad can’t stop raving about the project, “It has to be the most beautiful piece of screenwriting I’ve ever come across.”

Abbasi is a London School of Economics alum who went on to study Global Cinema at SOAS, before he started making short films. Cake is his first feature film.
