Qazi Wajid, one of Pakistan’s biggest radio and television personalities, died in Karachi on Sunday at the age of 87.

He is survived by his wife, daughter and grand children.

After complaining of discomfort and chest tightness, Wajid was taken to a local hospital on Saturday night. He died while being kept under surveillance.

It was a peaceful death, doctors and family said.

The performer began his career as a junior artist at Radio Pakistan in the early 1950s and soon carved a niche for himself as an astute broadcaster.

His character in Hamid Mia Kay Yahaan, played every Sunday morning, remained one of the most loved radio dramas for almost two decades.

There were several other outstanding performances by Wajid that won the hearts of audiences and guided young colleagues to use their voices in a manner that gave life to situations and characters.

Wajid, like several of his colleagues from Radio Pakistan, was reluctant to delve into TV and was among the first of those to perform for Pakistan Television in Karachi.

His TV career began in 1968 and continued until this year. Much of his most recent work can still be watched on various channels.

His first television performance as Nausha in Khuda ki Basti is still remembered by many and this was followed by a series of performances for PTV including Zair Zabar Paish, Ankahi and Kiran Kahani.

During this period he also clinched several awards including the Pride of Performance in 1988.
