Veteran Bollywood actor and politician Vinod Khanna died on Thursday morning after a long battle with cancer. He was 70. The actor, who was the most-sought after star in the 1970s and 1980s, was known for romantic roles. He’s survived by his wife, Kavita, his sons, Akshaye, Rahul, Shraddha and Sakshi.

The actor was admitted to Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai in the first week on April after reportedly suffering from severe dehydration. Recently, a picture of a frail-looking Khanna in a hospital gown had surfaced and brought attention to his battle with cancer. The actor has featured in films such as Mere Apne, Insaaf and Amar, Akbar, Anthony.

As a politician Khanna was first elected as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Gurdaspur in Punjab 1998. He was re-elected in the 1999 and 2004 general elections. He lost narrowly in 2009 to Pratap Singh Bajwa of the Congress party.

Khanna avenged his defeat in 2014 by winning from Gurdaspur for the fourth time.

A Punjabi born in Peshawar (now in Pakistan), Khanna remained popular in the constituency despite accusations that he remained absent from the area most of the time.

“Remembering the good times with you, Vinod. Thank you for being my friend,” wrote Rishi Kapoor, his co-star in Amar, Akbar, Anthony, wrote on Twitter.

“#VinodKhanna will always remain the coolest and most good looking actor to grace the Indian screens. The industry has lost a legend today,” tweeted actor Varun Dhawan.

Actor Akshay Kumar posted: “Sad to learn about the passing away of #VinodKhanna Sir, one of the most charismatic actors...truly end of an era. Condolences to the family.”

Khanna received plaudits for his performance as an angry anti-hero in Mere Apne and as a violent villain in Mera Gaon Mera Desh, aggressive roles that bucked the trend of polite, romantic leads favoured by Bollywood directors.

Khanna won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award in 1975 for his role in Haath Ki Safai. In 1999 he was given a lifetime achievement award. He last appeared on the silver screen in the 2015 film Dilwale.
