Actress Swara Bhaskar, whose portfolio includes Raanjhanaa and Nil Battey Sannata, says she was once told by directors that she isn’t “actress material”.

Bhaskar talked about the pressure celebrities are under to look good.

“I think all actresses feel the pressure of looking good. Not only actresses ... I feel all women in general feel this pressure. As compared to men, women are more judged on the basis of their looks,” Swara said.

“I remember the first year when I came to Mumbai. There were directors who actually said to me that, ‘You are not actress material. You are not heroine material.’ I remember other people, who said, ‘You are too intelligent looking’.

“Once a reporter asked me that, ‘Madam please tell that you are not that good looking ... So what do you feel about that?’,” she said.

The actress concedes that looking good is part of being a star, but adds, “As long as you love your own face, it doesn’t matter”.

Talking of her style, Bhaskar said: “I am completely incapable of dressing or styling myself. I rely a lot on my team — not just my stylist, but also people who do my make-up, as they make us look so good.”

The Tanu Weds Manu actress will next be seen starring in the upcoming web-series It’s Not That Simple. The six-episode series, which has been shot extensively in Mumbai, revolves around the idea of marriage, relationships, and a woman’s stance in various relationships.
