Actress Sonam Kapoor feels that actors Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan are being unfairly criticised for having opinions.

“Just imagine the way we are reacting to someone like Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan [their comments]. They will be afraid to say or talk about things because of the negative reactions. We should be supportive of people who have opinions — good, bad or ugly. Everybody should have a right to speak,” said Kapoor at the launch of her song, Ankhian Milaayenge Darr Se from the film Neerja.

Recently, Shah Rukh Khan’s comments on intolerance in the country drew ire from some sections of society, with some going so far as to vandalise theatres screening his film Dilwale. And when Aamir Khan spoke of his wife’s fear of intolerance in the nation, it sparked debate.

Kapoor termed the reactions to the issues “scary”.

Known for her strong opinions, the actress jokes that’s the reason she gets called to speak at conclaves, since the organisers “know she will make good copy”.

But as a result of her outspokenness she is often embroiled in controversy — like over her comments on Ranbir Kapoor along with Deepika Padukone on Karan Johar’s show or getting trolled for her “misogynist” tweet on the meat ban in Mumbai.

However, she said, “I don’t ever want to not have an opinion on something.”

She added, “I went through this. I said something and I was trolled on another level. But at the end of the day, if I have this platform, I have this voice, people actually listen to what I have to say. I’m going to keep doing it no matter what. Eventually somebody will hear what I have to say.”

Khan’s brief appearance in Coldplay’s new music video, Hymn for the Weekend, has also been subject to trolling.
