Dubai: By 11:20am Tuesday morning, Dubai prosecutors haven't issued a written approval allowing the family of Sridevi to collect her body, pending further law enforcement procedures, a senior prosecutor told Gulf News.
“Procedures in such accidental cases are very normal. Based on the findings and results of the police procedures and post-mortem report, prosecutors will decide on the next step. However, the public and the media should be aware that the law in such incidents require certain and very particular law enforcement procedures that has to be carried out prior to issuing a written approval to have the body of the late Indian actress or any other deceased’s body released.
Primarily and principally speaking, the family’s privacy must be respected and secondly, the authorities’ procedures and efforts must also be respected. This incident, is being treated like all other similar incident, since Dubai’s law enforcement officers and organisations treat all cases and involved individuals in the same manner ... law enforcement procedures are practiced and applied justly and equally on all individuals present on the land of the UAE,” said the senior prosecutor.

What is Embalming?
Sridevi's body has to be embalmed after it is released for repatriation to Mumbai.
But why is embalming so essential ?
A Dubai doctor under condition of anonymity explained that embalming was a branch of forensic medicine where a body was coated with a special embalming fluid . He said: "Embalming is carried out in the UAE strictly at a designated government health centre."
Usually when an individual dies he or she is buried or cremated the same day. However, in cases where the body needs to be preserved for long distance transportation or in cases of dignitaries for viewing it needs to be preserved .
Elaborating on the process the doctor said: "All fluids including blood is emptied out of the body cavities and a fluid which maybe anything as basic as formaldehyde or a combination of preservatives is applied to the mortal remains to prevent any decay."
Usually the potency of the formulation depends on the number of hours it requires to be preserved .
In the UAE, many of expatriates prefer to repatriate the remains of their loved ones so embalming becomes vital.

Uncertainty is continuing in the repatriation of Indian actress Sridevi as legal formalities are yet to be finished.
Authorities are yet to issue a clearance letter to release her body for embalming and subsequent repatriation, sources said on Tuesday morning.
Consul General of India in Dubai, Vipul, confirmed to Gulf News shortly after 10.15am that the mission had not received any update on the same.
"We are still waiting for information from the Bur Dubai police station about the clearance. They will inform us when they receive it from the public prosecution."
He said the consulate representatives were on standby to collect the document and submit it to the mortuary at Dubai Police Headquarters.

What is the procedure in such cases?
A chief prosecutor told Gulf News: “In such accidental death incidents, the results of the post-mortem and forensic examination reports are referred to the Public Prosecution as part of ordinary law enforcement procedures. The papers are revised by the prosecutors of the jurisdiction where the incident happened. An official order to hand over the body of the deceased to the family or relatives is issued shortly after that.”
In case of any suspicious foul play, prosecutors would carry out further detailed investigations and decide on any future law enforcement procedures accordingly, said the chief prosecutor.

Sridevi's death: Dubai Police has transferred the case to Dubai Public Prosecution, which will carry out regular legal procedures followed in such cases, according to the Dubai Media Office.
Following the release of the forensic report on Bollywood icon Sridevi's death in Dubai, the case has been moved to public prosecution.
2.13pm
Dubai Police said initial investigation shows that Bollywood actress Sridevi drowned following loss of consciousness in the bathtub of her hotel room.
They found traces of alcohol in her body and this may have led to the accident. “The investigation is still going on to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident as the forensic report only says that she drowned,” an official told Gulf News.
The police are trying to piece together the sequence of events and find out who was with her when the incident happened.

10.15am
Delay likely
Dubai Police have confirmed that there will be further delays in repatriating the body of Indian actress Sridevi, who died in Dubai on Saturday.
Around 10:15 am, the officials at the Forensic Medicine Department announced that the final post-mortem reports of their investigation were not ready.
They also briefed the representatives of the Indian Consulate that they were not in a position to give an update on by what time the reports can be released.
This means that the repatriation of Sridevi’s mortal remains to India is likely to be further delayed.
Senior Indian officials said they do not wish to speculate on the timeframe and would rather wait for the Dubai Police to issue the results to carry out the rest of the procedures for the repatriation.
The anatomy of a post mortem
While there are currently no reported mandatory procedures with regard to post mortem examinations for deaths in Dubai, it could be requested on a case-to-case basis, by either the police or the coroner/paramedic team/examining doctors. This would mostly be in cases where the cause of death is unclear, there is a lack of medical history records or if the person was found in suspicious circumstances.
A post mortem could also be requested by immediate family, to clarify the cause of death.
“The post mortem process can take up to an hour or two. The routine tests usually don’t take more than a day or two unless there are multiple tests being conducted, such as organ tests. This is usually done when the cause of death is unclear from initial exams. In that case, the pathology department could take from 3 days to even a week or more depending on the extent of the tests”, a practicing doctor in the UAE told Gulf News.
Cardiac Arrests
Speaking about cardiac arrests in particular he said, “While doing a post mortem in case of death from cardiac arrest, the initial focus is to find signs of pre-existing coronary vascular problems, like thickening of arteries, blockage, cholesterol plaque in blood vessels, and looking mainly at the heart for evidence of blocks.”
“If there are no pre-existing coronary conditions, a number of factors could lead to a cardiac arrest. They could be external or internal. External factors include any kind of physical trauma such as a blunt hit to the chest area, an electric shock etc. Internal factors could be electrolyte imbalance, extremely low potassium, calcium levels, or sudden metabolic ups or downs. Hypoxia or lack of oxygen can also cause the heart to stop.
Stress to the body post a recent surgery, toxins from severe bacterial infections or even insect/animal bites are other causes of cardiac arrest. The post mortem can effectively find evidence of whichever of these caused a cardiac arrest in the victim”, he said.

Toxicology
The toxicology reports of tests done on blood and organs of Sridevi are expected to reveal the exact cause of her death.
If the reports do not conclusively confirm a natural cause such as the reported heart attack, there will be further investigations which would mean even more delays for sending her body home, sources told Gulf News.
Sridevi’s family had said she had died of a cardiac arrest. Sources had told Gulf News that she had collapsed in the bathroom of her room in Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel. The forensic reports will reveal what exactly led to her death.
The long wait of millions of her fans, friends and relatives to know what exactly happened to her and when exactly her body can be flown to India seems to continue even as a private jet sent by Indian business tycoon Anil Ambani is waiting to fly her back home.
8.25am
Test results awaited:
Dubai Police are expected to release Bollywood star Sridevi’s mortal remains later today after blood and organ test results are out, Gulf News has learnt.
A Dubai forensic source said that the biopsy of blood and organs is routinely carried out in cases where cause of death is not clearly known.
"If a death takes place in hospital, then sometimes we do not need to carry out the autopsy. But in a case like this, it becomes imperative to know if the real cause of death is cardiac or non-cardiac."
"The blood and organ testing is carried out to ascertain any bacterial, viral, enzyme or toxic load that may be linked to the cause," the source said.
Once the result is ascertained, only then will the body be sent for embalming.
In the event that the forensics finds something, there could be further investigation.
The test results will be made available by 10am UAE time.
Bereaved family's statement:
