Actress Madhuri Dixit Nene, who performed a lavani dance for the song Humko Aajkal Kai, says she is looking forward to Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone’s own lavani performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s forthcoming Bajirao Mastani.

Lavani is a combination of music and dance popular in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

“Anything about dance always excites me, so I am very, very excited to see Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone’s lavani dance in Bajirao Mastani,” Dixit Nene said on Thursday during the launch of Mumbai’s first Contemporary Dance Festival, Jugnee.

In Bajirao Mastani, Chopra and Padukone will perform a lavani dance together, touted as a crucial part of the film’s climax.

Dixit Nene, who is a trained classical dancer and is also credited with introducing folk dance in films, has danced on screen alongside Karisma Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

“I had a competition with Karisma in Dil To Pagal Hai. It was wonderful. Shiamak [Davar] was the choreographer for that.

“The dancing was a little more jazz and contemporary and I was doing that style for the first time. I enjoyed when we danced. Karisma and I got along very well, so we had a great time,” she added.

Dixit Nene is all praise for the grandeur with which Bhansali shoots his songs.

Recollecting the time when she shot the Dola Re Dola song with Rai Bachchan for the film Devdas, Dixit Nene said: “Saroj Khan-ji had choreographed it and it was terrific. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has picturised it.

“There were many trolley shots and long shots and after a long time [in the industry] a song was being picturised on that level.”
