It has been 10 years since Kangana Ranaut started out in Bollywood and the actress says she’s glad her career took an unconventional path.

“I am extremely proud of my rags to riches story. It’s fun to be a misfit or an underdog if you acknowledge your gifts and befriend your obstacles,” Ranaut said.

Ranaut’s debut film Gangster released in 2006.

The 29-year-old actress has starred in a number of successful movies such as Woh Lamhe, Life in a... Metro and Fashion, which also earned her her first National Film Award.

Ranaut also had a string of flops such as Shakalaka Boom Boom, Raaz: The Mystery Continues and Vaada Raha, which almost pushed her into oblivion.

Her career got a new lease of life with the hit 2011 romantic-comedy Tanu Weds Manu. Her performance as the rebellious Tanu in Aanand L Rai’s film stayed with the audience.

Three years later came Vikas Bahl’s slice-of-life, inspirational drama Queen, which was not only a box-office success but gave Ranaut a hold in the industry.

Ranaut played an innocent bride-to-be, who is left at the altar by her groom, then goes on a journey of self-discovery.

Ranaut’s sincere and mature performance won the hearts of critics and audiences, and also got the actress her second National Film Award in addition to making her the highest paid actress in Bollywood.

Her double role in Rai’s 2015 rom-com Tanu Weds Manu Returns got her another National Film Award this year.

The top star’s upcoming films are Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon, Hansal Mehta’s Simran and a Lakshmibai biopic by filmmaker Ketan Mehta.
