Frieda Pinto weighed in on the Salman Khan rape analogy controversy without taking any names, but maintained that public figures have a responsibility to choose their words carefully.

“It can sometimes feel like a burden and I am not talking about this person [Khan]. But often you might want to say something and it may not be in the negative, but may be unconventional, then the responsibility comes with consequences. You have to be strong enough or bold enough to say sorry when you are wrong or stand behind what you said if you are right,” said Pinto to a reporter.

She was due to get the International Icon Of The Year title at the 17th edition of International Indian Film Academy Awards (Iifa) in Madrid on Friday.

Pinto, who became an instant star after the success of Slumdog Millionaire, added that those convictions should be one’s own. “There is a lot of responsibility on us, but not because you said so, because we should feel so,” said Pinto.

Salman Khan, who is attending this year’s Iifas, has been condemned for his “feeling like a raped woman” remark made while describing his gruelling schedule for the film Sultan. The rape analogy has been condemned and the star is yet to apologise for his remark.
