Former wrestling champion and actor Dara Singh, 84, died at his home in Mumbai on Thursday morning.
He was admitted to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital after a massive cardiac arrest on July 7.
“Dara Singh passed away peacefully at 7.30am this [Thursday] morning,” said Dr Ram Narain, COO, Kokilaben Dhirubhai.
Singh, who has acted in more than 140 films, including Mera Naam Joker and the epic TV series Ramayana, is survived by his wife and six children. This towering personality was last seen in the blockbuster Jab We Met as the strict patriarch of a Sikh family. According to reports, his last rites will be conducted in Mumbai at 2pm.
Meanwhile, his colleagues took to Twitter to express their condolences. Actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Bipasha Basu and director Farah Khan, shared their fondest memories over the social-networking site.
Khan described Singh as India’s own Superman with his tweet: “Wrestlers r made of sweat, determination & a hard to find alloy called guts...most apt for Dara Singhji our very own Superman.Will miss u sir.”
Bachchan called him a “fine” human being: “Dara Singh ji passed away this morning. A great Indian and one of the finest humans..An entire era of his celebrated presence gone!.”
