It's one of the ultimate wardobe classics. And thanks to the likes of silver screen siren Marlene Dietrich, whose androgynous style defined the look of a generation - and Yves St Laurent, who made Le Smoking the epitome of sophisticated dressing in the 1960s - the tuxedo has remained a wardrobe staple for decades, and is back in the spotlight once again for party season.

All over the autumn/winter runways, with everyone from women's tailoring star, Stella McCartney, to Prabal Gurung and Moschino showing their take on the classic two-piece, the tuxedo has been reinterpreted in all manner of guises, in everything from slouchy and oversized cuts, to shimmering sequins adding edge to this timeless classic.

Considered the only alternative to an evening gown, if you're suffering from party dress fatigue, now is the time to take your cues from the sharpest dressers in Hollywood and trial one of the season's standout red carpet trends.

And whether you choose to go rock'n'roll foxy, à la Jessica Stam with heavy chain accessories, or fabulously feminine like Dakota Johnson whose bow tie gave a cutesy edge, the tux is a blank canvas for reinterpretation.

Cropped cigarette pants and leather lapels look hot for the season, but wide lapels and flared trousers - a Tom Ford classic - are effortlessly elegant.

Black, white, navy, grey, or even jewel tones, it's almost impossible to get this look wrong. Just don't look to Celine Dion for sartorial inspiration.
