Indian designer Ritu Beri said she was inspired by Marilyn Monroe for her latest collection at Lakme Fashion Week, which began on Friday.

But while Icons of Luxury had designs inspired by the screen icon, it was, she said, for the Marilyn Monroes of today.

“She is the woman who lives in every woman. She is sexy, girly and romantic and so is my collection. The collection recreates the romance of a woman,” Beri said after the show.

Everything right from the clothes to the music echoed of this legendary fashion icon, who died 50 years ago.

The collection was feminine comprising of both long jackets and short shrugs, teamed with dresses, skirts and ripped jeans. Starting with the colour white, the garments were in mild pastel shades of red, pink, blue and yellow. All models sported headgear ranging from elaborate hats to caps with flowers.

“The clothes may look elaborate all together. But broken down as a single t-shirt or a jacket, they are pretty wearable. They have all been priced separately,” she said.

Supermodels Jesse Randhawa and Lisa Haydon walked the ramp for the designer. The show was attended by celebrities like Kunal Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon and Pooja Bedi.

Meanwhile, designers Jatin Verma and Shradha Murarka (Vizyon) took gothic to a whole new level with their dark yet glamorous collection. Both collections had dark shades of black, midnight blue, stone grey and dark purple, with a general theme of bling running through all the clothes. Verma introduced his Dark Angels’ to the ramp, showcasing a range of gowns and short dresses with special emphasis on shoulders. “With these clothes, I want to target the red carpet in India. Of course we will add colour according to what people want,” he said after the show.

Even though no props were used during the show, the atmosphere was made eerie with the choice of music.

The gothic tone was carried forward by Murarka, with many of her dresses featuring tassels.

“The clothes are for a festive season. We have used a lot of dark hues but all of them sparkle making them different and unique,” she said.

Filmmaker Karan Johar and Kareena Kapoor attended designer Anushka Khanna’s show.
