Today is the biggest event in Dubai's sporting and social calendar. While dresses have been bought and hats snapped up, there is still plenty to do in the final hours leading up to the Dubai World Cup.

Across the emirates, ladies are already busy preening themselves to be immaculately turned out for the event that has become THE place to be seen. Helping them to be in with a chance of winning the Best Dressed Lady award, beauty salons and hairdressers are working flat out to style and polish their clients to perfection.

The army of coiffeurs, nail technicians and make-up artists know from experience there will be no respite until the races get underway late today afternoon.

Hair for hats

Caroline Christian, manager of The Edge Hair and Beauty at Wafi Residence, says: "Our regular clients come to us asking us if they should wear a hat and what kind of hat they could wear. For those who want to wear hats, we advise them not to go for a complete up-style.

"We usually end up doing a low chignon which looks neat and tidy, and they don't have to worry about getting their hair messed up underneath."

She says alternative headwear is becoming increasingly popular. "Nowadays there are decorative hairpieces on combs and wires that you can incorporate into the hair so you can still see the hairstyle. It's a bit more of an elaborate decoration, usually with beads, feathers or artificial flowers arranged on a comb."

Asha Dodhia Murthy, owner of Aroushi Beauty Salon behind Lamcy Plaza, says: "Everybody who is going to the races wants to get their hair and nails done. They come the day before to get their nails out of the way because there is no time on the day."

Bookings up

Gillian Haines, manager of Marie France Beauty Salon in Jumeirah Beach Road, says regular clients have been calling to book a slot for their nails.

Haines says: "Ladies like to have lovely nails in Dubai and they like to look polished for such an occasion. We have seen a dramatic difference with a 30 per cent increase in bookings for manicures and pedicures. French manicures are very popular and many ladies are specifically asking for that."

Iram Waheed, owner of Essential Image Salon at the Mazaya Centre, says her bookings generally increase by up to 15 per cent for the days just before the World Cup.

"It's a very exciting time and the women normally wear hats so they usually want their hair up. They bring their hats in because their hairstyle will depend on whether we can open up the hat or if it's fixed," she says.

Whatever style they opt for, the world's richest race promises to be a triumph in the beauty stakes.

After weeks of glamour preparation, the final furlong is in sight.
