Manama: A wedding gown that has been worn by more than 25 brides over 50 years has gone on display in a cultural festival in Saudi Arabia.

The white-silver gown was made by a woman for her own wedding, but it was later worn by more than two dozen brides from the region of Al Qateef in eastern Saudi Arabia, local Arabic daily Al Sharq reported.

“The Qateefi Home pavilion is showcasing several items that reflect the rich heritage of the region,” said Siham Al Khenizi, a volunteer at the festival.

“The idea is to give younger people greater insights into their beautiful popular heritage. This is an opportunity to look back at the past, when more than 30 relatives lived together in the same house. Women had to be adequately dressed with something beautiful yet light enough to deal with the desert environment,” she said.

Women either wore dresses imported from India or made their own, Siham added.
