Going for gold is what it’s all about this summer – and not just by Olympic standards. The red carpet is in the midst of a major gold rush, with Hollywood’s biggest style hitters getting heavy on the fashion metal at every opportunity. From Jennifer Lawrence’s double whammy of glittering Hunger Games premiere gowns (which firmly cemented her as fashion’s newest golden girl), to long-time gold-lover Kylie’s mermaid-inspired number, whether it’s wisps of feather-light chiffon, rock’n’roll lamé minis or full-on, floor-length sequins, golden glamazons are dazzling day and night, proving that ore-inspiring style needn’t wait until after dark. And with the A/W catwalks literally paved with gold, if ever you’ve considered investing in the gold market, you couldn’t have picked a more stylish moment to increase the value of your personal style portfolio.
How to wear gold
- Take your cues from Balmain’s A/W12 catwalk, and pair a gold mini or jeans with a bleached denim shirt for daytime cool with after-dark decadence.
- A gold evening dress is a forever piece, but a heavily sequinned gown may be too hot to wear in warmer months. Choose silk, chiffon or embroidered mesh gowns for lighweight summer sparkle.
- A gold dress is a major style statement in itself. Keep accessories low-key, choosing simple hair and pared-down make-up – adding red lippy for a pop of colour.
- Cream, off-white, tan and nudes look effortlessly elegant with gold – as does classic black.
