Works by Dubai-based fashion designer Michael Cinco will feature prominently in the upcoming Hollywood space opera, Jupiter Ascending, starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum, out this week in the UAE.

The science fiction saga, written and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski, best known for their Matrix franchise, will see characters don three dresses especially made for the film by the Filipino designer.

“The biggest dress is the one worn by Mila Kunis’ character in a wedding scene,” Cinco says, adding he’s contractually forbidden from revealing any plot details. “It’s a white dress made of tulle and adorned with red ceramic roses. Her character was born a goddess in another planet and her look had to match that.”

Kunis plays Jupiter Jones, a cleaning lady who is told she is the heir of an interplanetary dynasty, and Channing Tatum plays Caine Wise, a warrior sent to protect her. The film, which was supposed to release in July last year, was delayed as producers went back to the studio for additional special effects work.

Cinco was commissioned by the film’s costume designer Kym Barrett, whose team member spotted one of his works in a magazine in London in 2012.

“I sent them a few samples of my work and they shortlisted six dresses and eventually picked three,” says Cinco, who made all the dresses in Dubai. “I am not sure if they will all make it to the final cut but I can see Mila wearing the wedding dress in the trailer.”

Cinco, who’s dressed everyone from Lady Gaga to Paloma Faith, recently designed the dress for Filipina star Marian Rivera’s wedding to actor Dingdong Dantes in what was dubbed the ‘Asian royal wedding of the year’.

Jupiter Ascending releases in the UAE on February 5.
