Dubai: Karl Lagerfeld drew inspiration from Dubai's gold souks and skyline for Chanel's first fashion show in the UAE city on Tuesday night, presented on a private artificial island.

Models in woven gold suits, floaty harem pants and even a jacket made of the same fabric as the ghoutra - the red and white headscarf worn by men in the region - walked down a sand catwalk before 1,000 international guests.

Two outfits referenced the Dubai skyline with what appeared to be a Burj Khalifa in sequins.

The Burj Khalifa is the world's tallest building and could be seen in the distance from the sandy island where Chanel had constructed a sparing purpose-built hall for the occasion.

But other looks were more subtle, with hints of gold amid the tweed the brand is known for.

Indian and North African inspirations too, could be drawn, with tunics layered over legging-like trousers and leather sandals.
