A murder trial for an actor who played a police officer on the television series The Shield is scheduled to begin on Monday.

Michael Jace is charged with killing his wife in May 2014 in their Los Angeles home. Jace called 911 and waited for police after repeatedly shooting his wife, April. His attorneys have said his state of mind at the time will be crucial to his defence.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Perry will consider final pretrial motions before jury selection begins later on Monday.

Few details about April Jace’s death have been revealed, but a prosecutor has said Jace shot his wife in the back and then shot her again as their young children watched.

The 53-year-old actor has remained in jail since the killing.
