In what may be one of the year’s easiest renewal decisions, FX announced on Tuesday that American Horror Story would return for a seventh season in 2017.

The horror anthology series from co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk has won 15 Emmy Awards, and its latest iteration — American Horror Story: Roanoke — has seen a 25 per cent leap in audience over season five — American Horror Story: Hotel — growing to 6.89 million viewers from 5.52 million.

“Ryan, Brad and their team of remarkable writers have done an amazing job of keeping American Horror Story endlessly inventive, shocking and entertaining and we are honoured to move ahead with them on the seventh instalment,” said John Landgraf, chief executive of FX Networks and Productions, in a statement on Tuesday.

AHS confronts our deepest fears with unmatched suspense and style. Each new instalment is a cultural event, hotly anticipated for its theme, imagery, cast and twists,” Landgraf continued.

Nothing is publicly known about the upcoming seventh season, but that’s nothing new for AHS. In anticipation of season six, the network and series released no information about what the story line would entail, even releasing seemingly unrelated teaser trailers to further the mystery.

Though it was long rumoured that the season would tackle Roanoke, it wasn’t until the September 14 premiere that the information was confirmed.

Who from the American Horror Story cast of players will return? Who will be running the show? What increasingly esoteric piece of Americana will the series transform into an unmitigated bloodbath?

Who can say?
