Wolfgang Petersen’s Oscar-nominated war film Das Boot is heading for a remake, according to German magazine Blickpunkt Film.

The 1981 drama, which follows the crew of a German submarine during the Second World War, will be remade by Bavaria Studios, the same production company behind the original. The studio boss, Christian Franckenstein, is also hoping to remake other titles from the company’s back catalogue. The original film was based on a novel by Lothar-Gunther Buchheim, who was stationed on a U-boat during the war. It was one of the most expensive German films of all time and went on to be a global success, both in its original release and the director’s cut, which was unveiled in 1997. It was also cut as a six-part miniseries.

Das Boot was nominated for six Oscars, including best director for Wolfgang Petersen, who went on to work in Hollywood, making films such as In the Line of Fire and The Perfect Storm.
