Veteran actor Tommy Lee Jones has joined actor Matt Damon in the next instalment of popular The Bourne film franchise.

Other stars to come on board are Alicia Vikander and Julia Stiles, while Paul Greengrass is back to direct and pen the script of the action film with Christopher Rouse, reports variety.com.

While the plot of the film is still not out yet, sources noted that Jones will play a superior officer at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The production is expected to begin later this year, and the film will be out next year.

Frank Marshall will produce again alongside Jeffrey Weiner for Captivate Entertainment.

Greengrass, Damon, Greg Goodman and Ben Smith will also produce the movie, while Rouse and Henry Morrison will serve as executive producers.

Damon’s three The Bourne movies, the first of which was released in 2002 (The Bourne Identity), grossed nearly $1 billion (Dh3.67 billion) worldwide at the box office.

Damon last played the iconic role in 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, and Jeremy Renner stepped into the franchise with 2012’s Tony Gilroy-directed The Bourne Legacy.
