The second trailer for Star Trek Beyond released this past weekend, and the tense, two-and-a-half minute affair shows the film will be a battle in every sense of the word.

“My dad joined Starfleet because he believed in it. I joined on a dare,” says Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk.

“You joined to see if you could live up to him,” replies Karl Urban’s Bones. “You spent all this time trying to be your father, and now you’re wondering just what it means to be you.”

A rocky mission on the USS Enterprise follows Kirk’s inner turmoil as our heroes go up against the new villain Krall, played by Idris Elba, out to destroy the colony of planets known as the Federation.

A few aerial shots of Dubai’s high-rise buildings, where the cast and crew filmed in September, pop up in flashes, as well a large-scale scuttle on the grounds of Central Park Residential Towers in Dubai International Financial Centre.

“This was way better [than] the first trailer. The first trailer was trying to act like Guardian of the Galaxy, which didn’t work at all,” wrote one YouTube commenter. Several others agreed.

Star Trek Beyond will be the third instalment of the franchise’s reboot. It’s directed by Justin Lin, who worked on the box office hit Fast and Furious.
