Star Trek fans mourning the death of Leonard Nimoy last month can take some solace from the news that the actor’s son, Adam Nimoy, is planning a documentary about his father’s life.
For the Love of Spock will focus on the character that defined Nimoy’s career: Spock, the half-alien, half-human officer whose coolly philosophical outlook helped shape the moral code of the Starship Enterprise. The father and son team were working on the idea in the months before Nimoy’s death, and its proposed release next year will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek television show, which began on September 8, 1966.
“This will be a tribute to my dad and Spock,” Adam Nimoy told Variety. “We have plenty to work from because my dad loved telling stories and he was very fond of the role.” He said the “outpouring of affection” in the wake of his father’s death had further convinced him to make the film, which he will direct and co-produce.
Leonard Nimoy played Spock in the television series, as well as in the first six Star Trek films — he also directed the third and fourth movies. He returned to the role in JJ Abrams’ reboot of the series, in both Star Trek and its sequel Into Darkness. He also wrote two biographies that acknowledged the character: I Am Not Spock, which acknowledged the “identity crisis” generated by the fame of his character, followed by I Am Spock in which he acknowledged just how much the character had influenced his outlook on life.
William Shatner, who made his name playing Captain Kirk opposite Nimoy in the TV series and films, has already agreed to feature in the documentary. It will be narrated by Zachary Quinto, who plays a younger version of Spock in Abrams’ films.
Adam Nimoy has previously directed episodes of various TV shows including Party of Five, Gilmore Girls, and, appropriately enough, Star Trek: The Next Generation. He also directed his father in an episode of The Outer Limits in 1995.
