Stars and other nominees react to the 74th annual Golden Globe bids announced on Monday in Beverly Hills, California:

- “Huge thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Russian hackers that made our nominations possible.” — Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ tweet on recognition for her and her comedy series Veep.

- “It’s our jobs as filmmakers, artists and storytellers to give meaning to the things going around us and to comment on that through images, words, pictures and music. So I don’t see how it couldn’t be influenced by our politics in this country right now because it’s so heated.” — Rich Moore, who with Byron Howard directed animated movie nominee Zootopia, which tackled bias and stereotyping through animal characters.

- “Thank you to the HFPA for always recognising new and unbelievable talent regardless of colour or culture. ... I feel beyond blessed and humbled to have been one of their discoveries. It’s 10pm in Thailand and I think we are going out for a celebratory beer and tacos. Yup. I said tacos in Thailand, wish me luck!” — Gina Rodriguez on her nomination for Jane the Virgin.

- “I did celebrate already, I was with a couple of friends who I drank champagne with. And now I’m on the road, it’s sunset now in France, in Europe, and I’m heading to Luxembourg where I’m going to be on stage in two hours. So this is all very exciting for me I have to say.” — Isabelle Huppert on getting long-distance word of her nomination for the movie Elle.

- “My daughter has a cold and she likes to watch movies with me. I’m probably going to be home all day with her, spending time with My Little Pony: Equestria Girls.” — Billy Bob Thornton, on plans with his 12-year-old after getting word of his Goliath nomination.

- “Woke up to a @goldenglobes nom! And then played hide and seek with my son before breakfast! Double win!” — Justin Timberlake’s tweet on being nominated for the song Can’t Stop the Feeling from Trolls.

- “The moment your mum captures you being nominated for your first Golden Globe. Priceless. I still can’t breathe. Beyond honoured, thankful, and proud. This can’t be real!” — Lily Collins’ Instagram post, with a photo of her covering her mouth in joyful response to her nomination for Rules Don’t Apply.

- “Bit of a day, bit of a day, bit of a day!” — Hamilton sensation Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Twitter post, a favourite saying of his, following his nod for the song How Far I’ll Go from Moana.

- “The thing we were talking about earlier today is the diversity. A list like this, all the way from motion pictures to television and to streaming, this was inconceivable when I was a young actor. A brave new world, and welcome to it.” — Jeffrey Tambor, nominated for Transparent, on a movie set discussion on Monday about the range of nominees.

- “My phone rang around 5am and my publicist’s number came up. I thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s in jail. I’ll have to bail him out.’ But he told me I was nominated and I said, ‘For what?’ ..... I’m thrilled by it. I wasn’t expecting it.” — Nick Nolte on how he learned of his nod for Graves.

- “HFPA! Y’all crazy for this one. And I couldn’t be more grateful! Thank you for such a tremendous honour! What a wonderful way to finish off the year...wow!” — Sterling K. Brown on his nomination for The People Vs O.J. Simpson.

- “CALL ME A GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINEE!!! OH MY GOD. I’m in tears. And on a plane. About to take off. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!” — tweet posted by Hailee Steinfeld on her The Edge of Seventeen nomination.

-”What a morning. The last time my phone started ringing like that at 5.30am. I think my grandfather had died. This continues to be the wildest, craziest, and most rewarding ride for all of us. I’m very grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognising our show, as well as Mandy and Chrissy, two insanely talented women who are as easy to root for as they are to write for” — Dan Fogelman, creator and executive producer of the drama This is Us, nominated for best drama along with its stars Chrissy Metz and Mandy Moore.
