French actress Elodie Yung has joined the Daredevil cast as the sai-wielding assassin Elektra for the second season of the Netflix series.
Marvel’s announcement describes her as “a mysterious woman from Matt Murdock’s past whose dangerous and exotic ways may be more than he can handle”.
In the comics, Elektra is the daughter of a Greek ambassador and met Murdock while they were in college. The pair were in a relationship until her father was killed and she became disillusioned with the law.
Jennifer Garner previously portrayed the character in 2003’s Daredevil and the 2005 spin-off Elektra.
Yung has experience portraying a ninja, as she played Jinx in 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Her past film credits also include playing Lisbeth Salander’s friend and lover Miriam Wu in 2011’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel television, said that they conducted a worldwide search to cast Elektra and that they “found in Elodie the perfect actress to embody both Elektra’s impressive and deadly physicality as well as her psychological complexity”.
This announcement follows news that Jon Bernthal has joined the Daredevil cast as the Punisher.
The second season of Daredevil will hit Netflix in 2016.
