Marvel antihero Deadpool is violent, foul-mouthed and occasionally nude in the new movie bearing his name, due to release in the UAE this weekend.
So movie fans got pretty excited when a local cinema chain tweeted that Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, will be released in the UAE “uncut”.
Some UAE fans had expected the Marvel film -- which won the US box office when it released there this past weekend -- to get the Wolf Of Wall Street treatment. In the UAE, that film was memorably cut by 45 minutes, drawing complaints from short-changed moviegoers.
Not so, a cinema spokesperson tells us: Deadpool “will not be butchered”, which is why Novo tweeted the film is uncut.
Yes, a scene has been cut: A full-frontal nudity scene, which our source says is not relevant to the story (Reynolds’ fans may beg to differ). That was cut by the studio, 20th Century Fox (the scene reportedly caused the film to be rejected by censors in China), before the film was sent to the National Media Council in the UAE. It was then passed with no further cuts, we understand.
The film’s distributor, Empire, tells us that the same version of the film is distributed to all cinemas in the UAE, so wherever you chose to watch Deadpool, it will be there in all its bloody, sweary and fully-clothed glory.
The film tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative Wade Wilson, who, after a rogue experiment, adopts the alter ego Deadpool.
