Padmaavat, the period epic featuring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, will release in the UAE on January 25.
According to industry sources, the controversial epic’s release in the UAE will coincide with the film's India release dates.
End of speculation
This development spells the end of month-long speculation as the film ran into trouble in India over its content. It’s the tale of a Hindu Rajput queen (Padukone) and Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji.
Protests over its storyline were carried out by caste groups who found the storyline offensive as they feared that the film would hurt the royal Rajput pride. But the Central Board Of Film Certification cleared the film for release recently suggesting several modifications including a title change from Padmaavati to Padmaavat.
India-wide protests
The film was scheduled to release worldwide on December 1, but got deferred due to India-wide protests. A bounty was also placed on Padukone’s head along with death threats directed at director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Padmavat will now take on Akshay Kumar’s social drama, Padman, on January 25 at the box office.
Earlier in the day, the social media handles related to the film changed from Padmavati to Padmaavat.
