Shame about Mitsubishi and the rumoured death of the Evolution lineage, isn’t it? OK, that’s enough mourning — the Evo’s eternal rival Subaru is here to lift our spirits with a WRX concept car straight out of the naughtiest rally driver’s imagination.

Unveiled in New York, this isn’t just a stunt to hypnotise showgoers to check out Subaru’s stand — the Japanese carmaker swears this design strongly hints at the next-generation WRX model.

The important bits are turbocharged power and all-wheel drive grip remain as ever, but in a more athletic form full of muscular haunches and the most aggressive front fascia this side of a constipated ninja.

The roof is carbon fibre to lower weight, and the classic bonnet scoop crowns the front end. Inside the air intake is a mesh grille, hawk-eye headlights harking back to the WRX’s past, and out back sits a wide rear bumper, rear diffuser and a boot lid with an incorporated spoiler.

Subaru says the colour is called ‘WR Blue Pearl III’ and those accents are in fluorescent yellow (Do they denote hybrid power?).

Forged BBS wheels are shod with bespoke 245/40 R20 Dunlop tyres, and the whole concept sits on a longer wheelbase than the current Impreza WRX saloon, but is shorter, wider and lower overall.
