Ever since Subaru announced its BRZ sportscar and later previewed the BRZ Concept STI at the Los Angeles show, we knew a version of the coupé tuned by the good people at Subaru Tecnica International (STI) was very much in the pipeline.

This week, we’ve got proof in the form of spyshots sent in to us by a reader who clicked away happily when he spotted an undisguised prototype STI-tuned BRZ lapping the Nürburgring. It retains the oversized rear wing from the first concept while sporting an STI body kit comprising a front spoiler, side sills and rear diffuser.

It rides on 17in light alloy wheels, and it seems to have a lower suspension compared to the regular BRZ. Although Subaru already has a turbocharged version of the 2.0-litre flat-four, the hallmark bonnet scoop is missing in the prototype, suggesting the motor could be naturally aspirated.

Since the test mule doesn’t wear any camo at all, it’s likely the car will be revealed as early as the upcoming Los Angeles or Detroit shows. We’ll keep you updated until then.
