We haven’t driven a car that’s more soulful than the Ferrari 458 Italia, but we already got our grubby hands on the McLaren MP4-12C this week in Dubai to see if that can change our opinion.

Now, close on the heels of the Ferrari 458 Spider, our spy has spotted a McLaren prototype being tested in Southern Europe with a makeshift roof, suggesting that Woking isn’t far away from unleashing the convertible version of its supercar.

The McLaren Spider is expected to get a folding hard-top similar to that of the Ferrari, but instead of aluminium, it’ll probably use carbon fibre in the mechanism.

The 3.8-litre V8 engine will be retained and performance figures should be more or less the same at around 600bhp and 600Nm of torque.

Expect slight changes to the suspension geometry in the drop-top, which could be revealed as early as Q4 of 2012.
