As we near September 13 and the start of the Frankfurt motor show, more and more manufacturers are giving us hints as to what will grace their stands.
Mazda is focusing on the all-new compact SUV built around the company’s Skyactiv technology. The CX-5 – shooting straight at the new Range Rover Evoque, Audi Q3, BMW X1, et al – will be go on sale in mid-2021, heading the new wave of Mazda’s Skyactiv production vehicles.
Don’t think of it as a shrunk CX-7, or a Mazda 3 on stilts; it’s all totally new, from the chassis, to the engines and transmission. Plus of course, that wonderful styling influenced by the company’s new design language, Kodo, or ‘Soul of Motion’, which highlights prominent new frontal treatments, with a bolder family face, and much more dynamic profile streaks.
Driving the new CX-5 is an engine line-up including the 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol, with huge compression ratios of 14:1. An automatic gearbox takes care of th rest, for targeted CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km for the diesel, and only slightly more than that for the petrol motor.
