Who doesn’t crave for a good night’s sleep free from tossing and turning after a hectic day? Sleepless nights can sap us of all our energy, productivity and overall quality of life.
Studies show that more than 50 per cent of the UAE population suffers from at least one or more sleeping disorders on a par with the global average in developing countries.
Along with poor air quality from pollution, odours and molds surrounding our environment, stress and anxiety are the primary reasons of all insomnia issues. Thus filling a home with fresh flowers and plants is one of the best ways to ensure better quality, peaceful sleep. In fact, certain houseplants have innate qualities that promote sleep.
Supported by a study done by Nasa, Saresa Anthonissen, the creative director of the Dubai Garden Centre, tells us about five plants that can help you put those sleepless nights to bed.
1. Aloe Vera
Listed as one of Nasa’s top air improving plants, aloe vera which is famous for its healing properties is also a popular bedroom plant. This is because as the sun goes down, aloe vera exhales oxygen, which facilitates peaceful sleep, especially if you are suffering from conditions like apnoea.
Top tip: This maintenance plant’s gel can be used for quicker healing of skin injuries, improving hair quality and a lot more.
2. Peace lily
The peace lily tops the list of plants that filter hazardous benzene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde toxins for your indoor environments. This plant exudes serenity and inhibits airborne microbes that trigger allergies and respiratory complaints. Rated a superstar by Nasa, this plant boosts the room’s humidity by up to 5 per cent and thereby, helps relieve dry noses and throats that keep you awake all night.
Top tip: Peace lilies are perfect for a bedroom as they thrive in shady spots and require only weekly watering.
3. English Ivy
This easy-to-grow plant is considered one of the best natural air purifiers. Studies by The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology show that the English Ivy reduces airborne faeces by up to 94 per cent and airborne molds up to 78 per cent in just 12 hours. Thus this is particularly beneficial to those who suffer from breathing problems triggered by asthma and allergies. This is a beauty that comes with health benefits.
Top tip: You can hang it from a basket or pot inside your home or place it on a ledge so the leaves trail down.
4. The Snake Plant or Mother-in-law’s Tongue
This is one of the most recommended plants for improving air quality. It is also called “the perfect bedroom plant” as it absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen during the night (most plants do this in the daytime), thereby fostering deep sleep. This low-maintenance plant doesn’t require much light or water, so it will be happy in any dim corner of your room.
Top tip: Four to six waist-high plants in one room would be appropriate to receive optimal output from this oxygen factory.
5. Gardenia Jasmine
With glossy evergreen leaves and beautifully scented blossoms, Gardenias are a popular choice for bedrooms. This ivory blossom, known for its sweet fragrance, has a calming and soothing effect on the mind and body. It not only initiates greater quality sleep at night but also increases alertness and productivity of a person during the day.
Top tip: If you suffer from insomnia or anxiety, investing in one of these beautiful blooms could be a healthier solution to taking pills.
