Dubai: Pablo Larrazabal said golf was ‘going crazy’ after the cut for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic was made at just five-under on Saturday morning.

Five-under is the lowest cut in the history of the tournament and meant the likes of Larrazabal, who finished round two on one under (70, 73), didn’t make the weekend.

Second rounds crept into Saturday morning after fog early on Friday forced late tee-off times, meaning half the field couldn’t finish before nightfall on day two.

“-5 cut this week at the #ODDC18 … i think golf is going to a point that is crazy …” tweeted the Spaniard after he missed the cut.

“We must tight the fairways, grow the rough and firm the greens to make it tougher … now a days, all about hitting it hard and putting contest … -5 cut at the #ODDC18 is crazy.”

Larrazabal wasn’t the only big name to have missed the cut. Others were Matt Fitzpatrick, Louis Oosthuizen, Graeme McDowell, Ernie Els and Lee Westwood on four under; Thomas Bjorn, Colin Montgomerie and Alvaro Quiros on three under; plus Danny Willett (four over) and Darren Clarke (eight over).

From the Mena Tour invites only Todd Clements made the cut at five under, while Henric Sturehed (four under), Jamie Elson and Luke Joy (both on two under) and Rayhan Thomas (six over) all failed to make the grade.

The previous lowest cut for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic was three under set in 2001, 2007 and 2013.
