Kannada film Hebbuli is making waves at the box office as the highest grosser this year.

tabloid! spoke to cinematographer turned director S. Krishna, before the movie’s release this weekend.

Krishna worked as DOP for 25 films before turning director with Gajakesari in 2014 and won the Karnataka state award on debut.

Hebbuli is his second film.

Hebbuli narrates the story of Captain Ram, a para-commando officer who investigates his elder brother’s (an IAS Officer) death. While the police claim it to be a case of suicide, Ram is not convinced. He begins an investigation on his own.

Sudeep plays Captain Ram.

V. Ravichandran, the multi-faceted artist of Kannada industry, plays Ram’s older brother. Malayalam actress Amala Paul steps into Kannada cinema as the leading lady of Hebbuli.

She plays a doctor who assists Captain Ram in his investigation.

“It’s a complete entertainer that also draws attention to a social ailment,” said Krishna, who found the inspiration to write this story after watching an episode of Satyameva Jayate (Aamir Khan’s talk show focusing on sensitive social issues).

“This episode was about medical mafia and how it affected the poor,” added Krishna. “I wanted to reach out to a large audience and with Sudeep in the lead, Hebbbuli has achieved that.”

Hebbuli was shot in Jammu & Kashmir, Bengaluru with a song-sequence filmed in Switzerland. The supporting cast includes Ravishankar, Ravikishan, Kabir, Chikkanna and Kaveri.

Karunakara A is the cinematographer. Arjun Janya has composed music.

Hebbuli produced by Raghunath & Umapathy Srinivas releases in UAE on March 30.
