If you’re a left-handed banana-loving middle child, then August is the month for you. Besides some of the conventional days celebrated, we have put together a list of 10 wacky days for the month. Happy August – also known as “Admit You’re Happy Month”!

1. Ice Cream Sandwich Day

August 2

Suffering from heat and humidity in the UAE? Then get an ice cream sandwich to cool off on this day. Although not officially recognised or celebrated, August 2 is informally known as the day for ice cream sandwich lovers.

2. Oyster Day

August 5

Celebrate Oyster Day by ordering a plate of glutinous oysters! They are one of only few foods that humans can eat raw. In the early 1900s, New York City used to be the go-to place for oysters due to its abundance, which led to an expansion of its dining scene.

3. Happiness Happens Day

August 8

“If you want to be happy, be.” Follow Leo Tolstoy’s advice on August 8 – put on a big smile and make yourself feel good just because! This day has been honoured by the Secret Society of Happy People since 1999.

4. Lazy Day

August 10

Observe this day by simply doing nothing! After all, in a demandingly fast-paced society, sometimes we all just need to take a break and loosen up.

5. Middle Child’s Day

August 12

Do you often feel left out between an older and younger sibling? On this day, you deserve all the attention you have craved for. Celebrate being a middle child on August 12 with Martin Luther King Jr. and Warren Buffett.

6. International Left-handers Day

August 13

If you’re left-handed, then celebrate this day with other left-handers like Barack Obama, Bill Gates and Hugh Jackman. August 13 is meant to raise awareness about left-handedness and reflect on progress that needs to be made in a world mostly designed for right-handers.

7. World Mosquito Day

August 20

Don’t worry – this day doesn’t honour that bothersome buddy that leaves an itchy lump on your leg. World Mosquito Day was established to raise awareness about malaria. August 20 was the day that scientist Ronald Ross discovered how malaria is transmitted from female mosquitoes to humans.

8. Be an Angel Day

August 22

No, you’re not expected to dress up in a white dress and wings on this day. On Be an Angel Day, deliver an act of kindness – write a card to your loved one or hold the door for the person behind you.  Remember, small gestures make a big difference.

9. Hug Your Boss Day

August 24

Things can often get a little tough between you and your boss, with frequent meetings and augmenting tension.
