While the concept can make for a very lively (read heated) discussion, today we are going to put all of that aside and simply celebrate the wonders of being vegetarian. And in order to do that, let's celebrate some of those famous celebrities who have embraced this grassy lifestyle.

1. Paul McCartney

The legendary Paul McCartney discusses how easy it is to become vegetarian and how he would never go back to eating meat, caterpillars or... Beatles for that matter.

2. Amitabh Bachchan

The Sean Connery of Bollywood, the Big B has been vegetarian for many years. In a recent interview he was quoted as saying that he gave up eating meat because he just didn’t feel right doing it and dismissed, it was for any religious or cultural reasons. Bachchan has also given up alcohol, smoking, tea and coffee.

3. Shahid Kapoor

Bollywood heartthrob Shahid Kapoor has been vegetarian for quite a while. He converted to the green side almost a decade ago. Rumour has it that he stepped onto a flight with a book - Life Is Fair by Brian Hines - and has since never touched non-vegetarian food again. So did Kareena Kapoor go vegetarian during this time too?

4. Kesha

Can you believe this crazy kid is vegetarian? According to her friends, Kesha is mad about being vegetarian and announced her lifestyle to the world a few years ago. She puts her decision down to her love for animals and animal rights. She even admits that all the fur she wears is faux.

5. Christine Lagarde

With the world’s culinary delights at your fingertips, it’s hard to imagine IMF chief Christine Lagarde, picking out a vegan salad from the menu. But it’s true and despite all the state dinners and world conferences (with foie gras trolleys) she attends, she says if she’s accidentally served meat, she just buries it under a pile of salad leaves and carries on chatting.

6. Leona Lewis

Yes she is Bleeding Love for animals, hence refuses to eat them. In a recent interview, the British singer/songwriter described herself as a true animal lover, who even shares her London home with two stray dogs, whose mother she rescued from the streets. She puts her turn to vegetarianism down to her love for animals and her belief that a meat-free diet is best for health including reducing the chances of cancer.

7. Joanna Lumley

Ex-Bond girl and the Absolutely Fabulous Joanna Lumley is not the gin-drinking, cigarette-smoking motor mouth we’ve come to think of her as. She’s actually quite high up on the karma chart. She says she longs for everyone to eat less meat if none at all and puts her high energy levels and youthful looks down to not eating meat for over 40 years.

8. Ricky Martin

Possibly one of the newest additions to the club, singer Ricky Martin, turned veg only four years ago after ‘Livin’ la Vida Loca.’ He says his conscience now makes him feel much better as a meat-free person and he is way more healthier than he was when he used to eat meat.

9. Narendra Modi

He probably became the most famous vegetarian (not counting Madonna of course) after his vegetarian US state dinner with Barack Obama and more recently in Abu Dhabi, where celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor was flown down to dish up a special vegetarian meal for Namo's dinner in the UAE Capital.

10. Virendra Sehwag

Cricket legend Virendra Sehwag is not only lead a vegetarian lifestyle, but has even made it into a business.  He owns a vegetarian café called Sehwag Favourites where dishes are named after his greatest innings.

Special mention: Mark Zuckerberg

Well he's not a vegetarian! But we believe there's a vegetarian hiding somewhere inside that Zuckerberg body. He announced on Facebook in 2011 he was turning vegetarian, but said he’d only eat animals he kills himself! Wait. What?! That really doesn’t sound quite as vegetarian as one should be.
