The Ladies’ Singles tournament at Wimbledon has been dominated by a handful of legends over the years. Since the open era began in 1968, the tournament has been won by only nine different players.

We pick five legends from the post-68 era who, between them, have won a total of 32 Wimbledon titles.

Martina Navratilova

Singles Champion x9 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990

Surely the greatest women’s tennis player of all time, Martina Navratilova won a record nine Wimbledon titles spanning three decades. It will be a long time before someone topples that record.

Steffi Graf

Singles Champion x7 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996

Steffi Graf was at the top of women’s tennis in the late eighties and early nineties. She won seven Wimbledon finals in nine years.

Billie Jean King

Singles Champion x6 1966*, 1967*, 1968, 1972, 1973, 1975 (* pre-open era)

Billie Jean King won the last two Wimbledon finals before the tournament ceased being an amateur event. She hit the ground running and won the first ever Wimbledon open title.

Venus Williams

Singles Champion x5 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008

Williams the elder was arguably the greatest tennis player during the turn of the century. Winning back-to-back title twice in 2001 and 2001, and then again in 2007 and 2008.

Serena Williams

Singles Champions x 5 2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012

Williams the younger, much like her sister, was arguably the greatest tennis player in the world after the turn of the century. She also defended her crown successfully twice.
