Jim Kerr, the front-man of Simple Minds

About the band Simple Minds are a Scottish band which began life as a failed punk-rock group known as Johnny and the Self-Abusers. Their first and only single was poorly-received and the band split up the day it was released. One half of the band reformed under the moniker Simple Minds which, fittingly considering we lost him this month, was a line taken from David Bowie’s song “Jean Genie”.

Their first hit that made headway in the UK charts was their 1982 song Promised you a Miracle, which peaked at number 13. Mainstream success came in 1985 with the release of now-cult track Don’t You Forget About Me which was followed quickly by Alive and Kicking.

Their Belfast Child track made Number 1 in 1989.
