REVIEWED: Qasr Al Sarab by Anantara
Living the Arabian fairy tale
There are few things more hypnotic than the setting Arabian sun behind a crest of blood orange sand dunes surrounded by absolute solitude in the middle of the desert. Having the landscape to yourself is an intensely intimate experience, and the mesmerising Liwa Oasis, on the northern edge of the Rub’ Al Khali desert, is the appropriate place to do it.
You could take a picnic to this historic oasis, or you could get the experts to do it for you. In our book, Qasr Al Sarab by Anantara (above) offers the perfect solution. The hotel, the furthest inland desert hotel in the world, has won accolades for its signature Dine By Design concept.
A customised four-course meal laid out on a rose petal strewn table at your own Arabian divan with personal butler, while you look out towards the Empty Quarter, are all taken care of by the hotel. All you need do is sit back and enjoy a dreamy meal set amid golden sand dunes and starry skies, just like an Arabian fairy tale. It’s the ultimate desert romance.
Her view: For someone not overemotional, I was hard-pressed to explain the moisture gathering in my eyes. I could attribute it to tear ducts irritated by the shifting sand. But, in the interest of truth, I have to admit that Qasr Al Sarab itself is nothing short of breathtaking. After a dozen, “Are we there yet?”, cramped muscles from a four-hour drive and the endless monotony of undulating dunes and unkempt shrubs, you arrive in the middle of nowhere to be enveloped in the majesty of nature. A glass of bubbly set the mood, followed by a stunning meal.
We dined on foie gras, king fish Qasr style and strawberry cheesecake. I’m not a fan of foie gras, but the fish was excellent. Marinated in tea, it came served with dates and smoked eggplant, which made for an unusual, exotic combination of tastes and flavours. The delicate and creamy cheesecake was part baked and part fresh and was a subtle exploration of dual natures.
His view: Truth be told, the setting is enough to thaw even the most unromantic, ice-hardened of hearts. Even I felt a pang of sentimentality. The picturesque stillness of the desert sweeps an intense intimacy into the experience. Dining by design in the desert is an unforgettable experience. There are very few occasions when you are impervious to a stray crystal of sand making its way uninvited into your water or bubbles, and this is one of the only times you can cast this otherwise eminent worry aside. The camel milk chocolates are a real, indigenous treat in this oasis of calm: I haven’t tasted better. It’s just a little touch that accentuates that quintessentially Emirati charm of Qasr. And there are, of course, those helpful souls who cater to your every culinary and comfort-inclined whim. The service is immaculate, speedy but unobtrusive, and having the table laid out for you on arrival is always a rare treat.
Dine by Design packages start at Dh520++ per person and include a bubbly welcome drink. Guests can choose from a set menu or have one created for them. Bookings must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Call 02 886 2088 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
