Sharjah: Jordan’s Fuheis look like serious contenders for the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST) basketball finals after beating Somalia’s Mogadishu 95-49 over the weekend.

Sharjah Women’s Sports Club also beat Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah United 90-30, and Egypt’s Sporting Club beat Kuwait Girls Club 87-71. It was the perfect opening day of the fourth edition of the tournament, which runs until February 12, ending with the crowning of winners in nine disciplines; basketball, volleyball, table tennis, fencing, archery, shooting, athletics, show jumping and karate.

Egyptian Sporting Club also clinched two gold, plus one silver and a bronze in the opening day of the fencing at the AWST.

Mariam Al Zuhairi, won the individual open foil category, while Nardeen Ihab Shawki, won the individual open epee, Sara Tamer Nono, got silver in the same category and Nourhan Osama Dosouki got epee bronze to round off an all-Egyptian podium.

In the individual open foil category. Emirati Latifa Salem Al Hosani from Sharjah Women’s Sports Club won silver, while Bahrain’s Maram Mohammad Abdul Rasool and Maha Al Dosari from the Al Halah Club shared bronze.

In the individual open epee, Algerian Yusra Zabouk from Mouloudia Club shared third place with Egypt’s Dosouki.

The AWST is hosting 68 clubs from 16 countries and over 1,000 athletes.
