The Kinahan-Hutch feud has been simmering in Dublin for the past two years, and has claimed a dozen lives so far, 10 around the Irish capital and two in Spain.
THE KINAHAN CARTEL
The Kinahans are believed by Irish police to have ties with the Russian mafia and the Colombian and Mexican drug cartels. Police believe the gang controls those cartels’ shipments into both the UK and western Europe, and netted €400 million from the illegal trade.
Christy ‘The Dapper Don’ Kinahan
A career criminal, the 60-year old spent a decade in jail in in the 1980s for heroin offence. He refused an early release, instead perfecting both Russian and Spanish, and left jail with two degrees. He is currently living abroad, and Irish police say he has left the running of the operations to his sons, Daniel and Christy junior.
Daniel Kinahan
A boxing promoter who lives on Spain’s Costa Del Sol, he returned to Dublin in February for a WBO bout. There, he escaped through a window when an armed gang dressed as Irish police targeted him. Instead, they killed gang member David Byrne.
Christy ‘The Cap’ Kinahan
He’s called ‘The Cap’ by gang associates who fear that even mentioning his name could single them out for being a ‘rat’ or informer. Police believe he controls the day-to-day operations and works closely with Daniel.
‘Fat’ Freddie Thompson
A cousin of the slain David Byrne, ‘Fat’ Freddie is a career thug who has recently been released after serving a 20-month stretch for a vicious bar fight.
THE HUTCH GANG
The gang are brazen and have amassed an illegal fortune from bank robberies, jewel heists and controlling the inner city and north Dublin drug trade.
Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch
Christened ‘The Monk’ for his disciplined lifestyle that has kept him alive, he has been in trouble with the law since he was 10. He was a habitual offender who was last released from jail in 1985. In interviews, he accepts that he is a “convicted criminal” but says he made his money in property dealings. He hasn’t been seen in Dublin since February 2016, and has been spotted in Lanzarote on Spain’s Canary Islands. Police believe there’s a €1 million bounty on his head.
Gary Hutch
His murder in September 2015 sparked the current vicious bloodletting. He had worked for the Kinahan cartel but plotted to have Daniel killed during a staged robbery of €1 million on the Costa Del Sol. A champion boxer who happened to be at Kinahan’s villa prevented the robbery.
Eddie Hutch senior
The taxi driver was gunned down in February, three days after the attempt on Daniel Kinahan.
Eddie Hutch junior
A gang member with a string of convictions, he caused RTE, Ireland’s national broadcaster, an embarrassing moment when he won a place on Winning Streak, a televised gameshow. His brother Ross took his place on the show instead.
Derek ‘Del Boy’ Hutch
Currently serving 16 years for robbery, police believe he still holds sway in prison and on the street. He has also served a six-year stretch for a 2007 manslaughter and has racked up more than 40 convictions.
