The official poster for 'The Lord of the Rings' movie

When J. R. R. Tolkien was penning the fantasy novel, The Lord of the Rings, he may not have known how popular it was going to become. According to www.goodreads.com, the novel is the second best-selling novel ever written, with over 150 million copies sold worldwide.

When asked online, Gulf News’ Twitter followers believe that The Lord of the Rings movie series was the best cinematic adaption of the books.

The novel, which focuses on the magic of Middle Earth, was meant to be a single volume, but later developed into a much larger work. Now sold in three volumes, the book series was adapted into a movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson.

The three movies were shot over a period of eight years, with filming done in New Zealand. The films were critically acclaimed and awarded. Between the three, the series received 17 Academy Awards. The final film in the series, ‘The Return of the King’, won all of its 11 Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture. This made it one of the three movies to win the most number of Academy Awards.

With such praise, it isn’t a surprise that people still believe that it was the best cinematic adaptation of the book series. Do you agree? Tell us at readers@gulfnews.com.
