Mary Ann Evans, popularly known by her pen name George Eliot, was born in 1819 and became one of the leading English novelists of the 19th century.

Her major works include Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860) and Middlemarch (1874), which was voted as one of the top 100 books ever written by UK-based newspaper, The Guardian in September 2014. They described it as a book “that can exert an almost hypnotic power over its readers”.

When asked on Twitter, majority of our followers knew what her real name was. Her novels are celebrated for their realism and psychological insights till date. According to a BBC report, she used a male pen name to “ensure her works were taken seriously in an era when female authors were usually associated with romantic novels”.
