The Dubai International Film Festival (Diff) will showcase a series of short films from the Lumiere brothers, the pioneers of cinema who have made some of the world’s first films using the Cinematograph, an invention that captures moving images.

Lumiere! Inventing Cinema will be presented on December 8 at 4pm in the Madinat Theatre during Diff’s 13th edition. The annual festival runs from December 7 to 14.

This exhibition, a compilation of 98 conserved and restored films in 4k that Louis Lumiere and his brother, Auguste, made between 1895 and 1905, will be presented by Thierry Fremaux, the General Director of the Cannes Film Festival and the Institut Lumiere in Lyon.

In 1895, the Lumiere Brothers invented the Cinematograph (a device for capturing, developing and projecting films) and went on to film some of the first moving images in the history of cinema. Their staging of a scene, their use of travelling shots and special effects all reveal the art of film making. The compilation consists of almost 100 short films ranging from world-famous masterpieces to less well-known gems, all fully restored in 4K showcasing a glimpse of France and the world in the early 20th century.

“We are thrilled to welcome Thierry Fremaux to present to film fans in the UAE a spectacular exhibition dedicated to the pioneers of cinema Louis and Auguste Lumiere. The exhibition offers festival goers an opportunity to experience the brilliance of the brothers and bring us face to face with the past and presenting us with an enlightening portrait of the birth of cinema,” said Abdulhamid Juma, Diff Chairman, in a statement.
