An exhibition celebrating the life and work of hip hop photographer Lisa Leone will open at the Dubai Design District (d3) on March 22. Presented by Dubai’s annual street culture event Sole DXB, the show will look at the history of hip hop and include never-seen-before pictures by Leone as well as selections from her book Here I Am. New York hip hop group The Beatnuts will perform on the opening night.

Leone will also be on hand to sell editioned works.

“I’m very excited about coming back to Dubai. On my last trip, although short, I could really feel the enthusiasm and passion for a culture so close to my heart. The artists I met and photographed were so open and warm, I’m looking forward to my return,” she said.

Some of Leone’s works to be exhibited include images of rapper Nas recording for the first time in a studio for Illmatic, considered one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time; Snoop Dogg on the set of his first video; and hip hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash.

The Lisa Leone x Sole exhibition opens at 7.30pm on March 22 at Building 7, Design Quarter, d3. Entry is free for the opening night as well as at the showing, which runs until April 5. It’s closed on Fridays. To purchase editioned Lisa Leone artworks from the exhibition, email inquiries@soledxb.com for pricing and more information.
