Dubai-based art organisation Tashkeel is once again throwing open its extensive studio facilities to budding young artists during its annual summer camp, which runs from August 14 to August 25. The two-week camp includes a variety of creative workshops for children and teenagers between the ages of eight and 16. Participants can choose to sign up for one week, two weeks or for specific workshops. All the workshops will be conducted by professional artists and art educators, and will run from 10am to 1pm daily on week days.

The first week, from August 14 to August 18 will include workshops on painting, drawing, tie and dye, large paper sculptures and pinhole photography. The painting workshop is designed for artists of all skill levels to learn how to mix colours, build a composition and create their own masterpieces using acrylic paints on canvas. The drawing sessions will cover portrait drawing with markers, pencils, crayons and charcoal. During the tie and dye class, participants will experiment with a variety of techniques and fabric dyes and create their own personalised tie dyed T-shirts. The young artists will also learn how to use cutting, folding, rolling, curling and fringing to create paper sculptures. In the pinhole photography course, participants will learn how an analogue camera works by building a pinhole camera from scratch and using Tashkeel’s dark room facilities to develop their photos.

The workshops planned for the second week, from August 21 to 25, include monotypes with Gelli plates, screen printing, collage, casting and sculpture, and dry point etching. In the monotype workshop, participants will use gelatin plates to transfer inked images onto paper, and experiment with stencils, layering and other media to create painterly prints. The screen printing workshop will show participants how to prepare and expose a screen to create individual artworks that will be printed on tote bags, paper and t-shirts. In the collage workshops, the artists will use found materials to create new images, landscapes, and figures. The casting and sculpture workshop will teach them how to make molds to create casts of objects and also to create freestanding sculptures using cardboard, ModRoc and other materials. They will also use the print making equipment at Tashkeel to create a plate with the traditional method of dry point etching and use it to make multiple prints.

“Our art camps have been a big hit over the last three years. We are looking forward to another great summer with a fun-filled line up of challenging and creative workshops. Teaching through process allows for more experimentation and each and every student to have some element of artistic expression. We want to give participants the opportunity to cover a broad range of activities and to try things they would not normally get a chance to try; and we have made the workshops accessible to all by giving participants the flexibility to choose the time period and the workshops they are interested in,” Tashkeel studio manager, Tamsin Wildy says.

The cost of the workshop is Dh1,200 for one week, Dh2,200 for two weeks and Dh250 for one workshop. A 10 per cent sibling discount is offered.
