WHEN applying for a job, you might think dusting off your old CV and checking for spelling mistakes will probably be enough to get you noticed.

But in the self-obsessed age of Twitter and YouTube, it seems the CV is increasingly being replaced by a ‘MeVie’ — a video showcasing the candidate’s personality.

The trend was initially driven by tech-savvy young jobseekers hoping to stand out at a time when there are around 85 applications for every graduate post.

But according to a poll by recruitment specialist HMNI, almost three-quarters of employers think CVs are no longer ‘effective tools’ for job applications.

The survey of 540 employers and 500 university students and recent graduates also found that 85 per cent of young people think potential employers will want to know more about their personality than their qualifications and experience.

John Dixon, executive director of general merchandise at Marks and Spencer, said the MeVie is now ‘transforming recruitment’.

He added: ‘As an employer, it can be problematic differentiating between candidates by CV alone. The MeVie allows you to see beyond the CV to the person behind it.’
